Cigarettes & Coffee

What happened here last night?

We were smokin' cowboy killers when it crept into the light

Like a creature from a thriller, then it crawled into your eyes

Which turned around to look me over

Is it truth, or is it lies

That got behind the long awaited element of surprise

Which seeped out of your veins, and now is buried in my mind?

Just another pound to carry on my shoulders

But I'll see you in the morning

Over cigarettes and coffee

Pretending that it's been a lovely time

So smoke em' if you got em'

And I'll take one more to go

I gotta catch a train that's headed on down the line

I left just for the night

To walk about and hope to god that everything's alright

It's hard to think of all the time that's hurried quickly by

But so easy to believe it'll soon be over

But night turns into day

And even though I haven't slept, I feel a certain way

Like life is just a game that even losers have to play

Until the sun goes down again behind our shoulders

And I'll see you in the morning

Over cigarettes and coffee

Pretending that it's been a lovely time

So smoke em' if you got em'

And I'll take one more to go

I gotta catch a train that's headed on down the line

Baby Come Home

Sometimes I wonder what this livin' means

I might be too crazy for that can of beans

Some got the dough and some got dreams

And baby won't you please come home

It's a messy situation hangin' round with me

Wherever I am is where I'm cool to be

Someday I might wake up in the middle of the sea

Singin' baby won't you please come home

I got storm clouds in my eyes

But really, there's nothing wrong

I've never been too good at goodbyes

So baby won't you please come home

Sometimes I stare way off into space

Could get lost in any old familiar place

I've been told I need help, well if that's the case

Then baby won't you please come home

I talk to the lord and the devil too

One gets jealous and you'd never guess who

Neither one will let me forget about you

So baby won't you please come home

I got storm clouds in my eyes

But really there's nothing wrong

I've never been too good at goodbyes

So baby won't you please come home

Without You

So you keep up with the phases of the moon?

Well she turned away too soon

Sometimes I'm like a stranger in the world

And I wouldn't mind if not for you

Oh, god knows I do

It's true, an angel talked me out of putting on my shoes

He told me I'd be headed nowhere without you

So I keep up with the stars enough to know

That I got a long way to go

But I'm proud to say that I stopped counting scars

That might never turn to gold

Upon my soul

Oh, they take their toll

It's true, an angel talked me out of putting on my shoes

He told my I'd be headed nowhere without you

Lonesome Premonition

Eyes upon a blank white wall

No one even knows you called

They all got fried

And you are feeling like tomorrow

Is just too steep to climb

Or to fall from

So baby, what would you say

If you knew your precious world

Was gone today

Caught up again

Inside your own reflection

Searching in your eyes

For a sense of direction

So go and see what's left to hide

Behind a gleaming smile

Until tonight

Trying to be Gone

I've seen the open road

Falling into nothing and everything at once

And it turns into a highway

Traveling the speed of light

Not knowing where we're going

Just trying to be gone

And I've seen an eagle soar

I've reached a height or two, myself

Atop the rocky mountains

And I jumped into the wind

Which carried me away like I was only ever nothing

But was happy for today

So if you see me hangin' round

Rollin' smokes and draggin' my feet across the town

You can ask me what it looks like

In my lonesome premonitions

Of the big, bad end of time

I'll tell ya for a dime

Because I've seen the open road

Falling into nothing and everything at once

And it turned into a highway

Traveling the speed of light

Never knowing where we're going

Just trying to be gone

Autumn Dawn

I must admit, I can't resist

Bowing to the bitter disposition of the faces on the wall

What would it take to convince a lonely soul

That he's not the chosen one?

He's just another boy

Who was bound to take the fall

Don't think too much about it all

Take it easy, don't gotta take it all to heart

It's only living

You were doomed right from the start

Oh child, watch out

You'll take it serious until you get the joke

Then you'll laugh until you cry

Even though your heart is broke

Because the show must go on

Dance in the golden rays of dawn

Voyage

Sail to the deep and the wide open

The wide open...

To secrets that keep my eyes open

And my heart foldin' like a wave

Foreign to me is the way for you

All but the way toward you

The edge you walk is steep

But your mind holds you

None else controls you today

Not today...

So don't cry for me when the sea takes you

When she carries you away

Let be what will be

And I'll cry for you

My tears will be the sea that I'm to sail

Away...

Away...

Streets of Emptiness

I'm far away from home, and the stars don't shine to help me

But they shine nonetheless

I can't recall what told me to go

What could ever stop me but the streets of emptiness?

And where do we go from here?

Give me a reason not to disappear

Somewhere in the dark

I'm far away from home, and the sky is full of pictures

Of every face that I have passed

I can't recall a handful of their names though

I met them on the streets of emptiness

And how did we all move along?

Did something happen while I was singin' a song?

Because now everybody's gone

I'm far away from home on an old abandoned highway

Where it leads, I have no guess

But every turn will take you closer to the sunset

When you walk down the streets of emptiness

And if I see you again

Lord knows that all I ever wanted was a friend

So until then...

And where do we go from here?

Give me a reason not to disappear

Somewhere in the dark

Brother

So you found yourself a light

To guide the way

Cast it deep into the night

As bright as day

You lost a piece of precious time

Or so you say

Time is not for dwelling on

Lest you go astray

My Brother, now I fare you well

You must not stay

Pass along into the dark

Beyond your grave

Rest assured, I'll find a way

To set me loose

And walk on toward the light

That shines from you

Shine on Brother

Shine on Brother
